Let your light shine!

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12 ESV

Jesus is often referred to as the light of the world. His brilliant words spoken atop mountains penetrated the hearts and souls of those listening. His words illuminated the character of God, and the intent behind His laws.

His light blazed fiercely against sin, yet was a warm and glowing ember of hope towards sinners. The healing power of Jesus’ light restored lepers, cured the sick, raised the dead, and brought sight to the blind. The darkness trembled as He cast out demons and freed the oppressed.

The Pharisees sought to extinguish Jesus as they nailed Him to the cross, yet it was impossible for His light to be snuffed out. Jesus rose again in all His dazzling glory to conquer death once and for all.

Then He infused His disciples with the light of His Holy Spirit, and commanded them to take that light to everyone in the world. His light still exists today, through each and every one of His followers. He tells us to shine this light brightly for all to see.

When we live the lives we were created to live by committing ourselves to excellence and righteous living, our good deeds will shine with the light of Jesus. We will reflect His loving character to a desperate world.

"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.” Matthew 5:14-15 ESV

Sadly, many Christians today hide their light. Statistics show that over 70% of Americans identify as Christians. This makes Christianity the most common religion in the United States. However, a Barna Research Group study found that only a dismal 9% of America's "born-again believers" adhere to a biblical worldview. This means, only a small fraction of those professing Christianity are actually using the Bible as the framework for how they live.

We are told Jesus came into the world as a shining light to conquer evil and push back the darkness. As His followers, we are commanded to do the same. We are told to put on the armor of light and walk as children of light. We are asked to shine for Him and reflect His brilliance to all.

Our faithfulness, love, and integrity reflect Jesus’ light for all to see. As we persist in good deeds, empowered by the Holy Spirit, we will draw others to the true light of Christ. As we follow Jesus we will bring His light to those who are still walking in darkness.

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. Isaiah 9:2 ESV

Just as plants need light to survive physically, every one of us needs the light of Jesus to thrive spiritually. There is only spiritual darkness until Jesus lights up our life with His glorious presence. We step out of the shadows and into His warm and comforting light when we receive Him as Lord and Savior.

He brings His light into the dark places in our lives and exposes them to bring growth and healing. He illuminates the sinful places in our lives so we will repent and receive forgiveness and He empowers us with grace to change. His light revives us, restores us, guides us, and saves us.

When we commit ourselves to excellence and biblical living, we will bring Jesus’ light everywhere we go. This light will illuminate everything. It will bring warmth to our households and to others. It will dispel the darkness that threatens to envelop our very existence.

It will invite praise, which will then be an opportunity to glorify our Heavenly Father, from whom all blessings flow.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 ESV

So, Dear Friend, have you been hiding your light under a basket? Have you been keeping your faith to yourself or following your own way of doing things rather than living Jesus' way? If so, now is the time to commit wholeheartedly to following Christ and obeying HIs commands.

The world needs your light!
